In this lecture, author, transpersonal therapist, and creator of The Witch’s Cat Tarot, Tree Carr guides participants through the Jungian concept of the Shadow — the hidden, repressed, and unacknowledged aspects of the psyche that quietly shape our behaviour, relationships, and creative lives in subtle but powerful ways.
Bringing together Jungian psychology, transpersonal psychology, archetypal theory, and symbolic/esoteric traditions, this talk explores how the Shadow is not something to “eliminate,” but to encounter, understand, and integrate as part of a fuller sense of self.
We will also explore how archetypes function as psychological and symbolic patterns of meaning. In particular, The Fool archetype is introduced as a guiding figure for liminal states of becoming — representing trust, risk, uncertainty, and the willingness to step beyond the known. The Fool becomes a mirror for the inner journey of shadow work: the part of us that must step forward without certainty in order to transform.
Key themes include:
Jung’s concept of the Shadow and psychological projection
The role of archetypes in shaping inner life and behaviour
Transpersonal psychology and expanded states of awareness
Symbolism as a bridge between unconscious and conscious mind
The Fool as a threshold archetype of transformation and risk
The lecture culminates in a guided, interactive shadow work tarot spread designed to help participants begin identifying and engaging with their own shadow material through symbol, intuition, and reflection. This is an experiential space where psychology meets symbolism — offering both conceptual grounding and practical tools for inner exploration.
Tree Carr is a published author, TEDx speaker, transpersonal psychology therapist, and Death Doula whose work explores dreams, death, altered states of consciousness, creativity, and psychedelic integration. For over three decades, she has worked at the intersection of mysticism, psychology, storytelling, and the arts, supporting individuals and groups in navigating liminal states of dreaming, transformation, grief, and meaning-making. Her practice blends transpersonal psychology with symbolic and imaginal approaches, offering grounded yet expansive tools for inner exploration and personal change.
She is a graduate of Alef Trust’s programme in Psychedelics, Altered States & Transpersonal Psychology, and has undertaken further study at MetaIntegral Academy in California. She is a CPD Crossfields Institute–certified Death Doula and has also studied Ecology, Spirituality and the Paranormal at the Sophia Centre (University of Wales Trinity Saint David), alongside training in Mediumship & Creativity at the Arthur Findlay College.
Tree teaches dreamwork, lucid dreaming, and consciousness studies at The College of Psychic Studies in London, and has lectured for The Psychedelic Society UK and the Royal College of Art. She has also spoken at venues including Tate Modern, The Freud Museum, Breaking Convention UK, the Barbican, and New York University, where she has explored dreams, symbolism, and creativity with students and audiences. She is a scholar and teacher of The Rider-Waite- Smith Tarot Deck.
Alongside her therapeutic work, Tree has a long creative background as a musician, filmmaker, writer, and cultural curator. She founded Today Is Boring, a cult East London film space dedicated to underground cinema and experimental culture, which ran from 2002–2012. She is the author of ten books on dreams, magic, culture, and consciousness, including Dreams, Conscious Dreamer, The Artists’ Oracle, A Spell A Day, Dreamwork, and The Witch’s Cat Tarot.
As a psychedelic integration therapist and Transpersonal Dreaming Guide, she supports individuals in integrating non-ordinary experiences through dreamwork, storytelling, and creative reflection. As a Death Doula, she offers compassionate support at the end of life. Tree co-creates WITCH, an immersive retreat exploring ritual, creativity, and altered states with Charlotte Church at The Dreaming in Wales.
