After the publication of the Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) Tarot, Aleister Crowley wrote a fierce review, condemning Waite’s 'Key to the Tarot' as pompous and spiritually restrictive, and blaming him for limiting Pamela Smith’s artistic freedom. Yet, Crowley’s critique foreshadowed his own vision for Tarot—a vision he realized through his collaboration with Frieda Lady Harris.

Unlike Waite, Crowley initiated Harris into a five-year collaborative process, sharing his Thelemic framework rooted in ceremonial magick, Qabalah, and esoteric symbolism. The resulting Thoth Tarot is not only richer symbolically but designed as a powerful magickal tool. The Book of Thoth, book and deck represent the pinnacle of occult Tarot—melding abstract art, transcendental mysticism, and multicultural symbolism to guide serious students on a path of spiritual transformation.

Safa has dedicated her Work to deciphering the Thoth Tarot and the Thelemic philosophy it embodies. As a tarotière, She spent six years mastering the complex and powerful method of divination Opening of the Key, designed to develop both technical skill and magical insight. In this workshop, she will guide you in approaching the Thoth Tarot, as we unpack Crowley’s often cryptic language, navigate his intricate correspondences, and explore how the deck can deepen your intuition, refine your practice, and support real-world decision-making.

This workshop requires an intermediate understanding of Tarot and is ideal for students of ceremonial magick, as well as those seeking a deeper, more transformative connection with occult Tarot.

1. A Millennium Long Journey: Cultural History of Tarot (07/09)

In the introductory session of this series we delve into the layered history of Tarot, before turning to the cultural, political, and esoteric forces that gave rise to the Thoth Tarot. This session explores how the deck emerged from the early 20th century’s fertile mix of occult revival, art movements, and revolutionary thought—shedding light on the unique collaboration between Aleister Crowley and Frieda Lady Harris.

2. Drama of the New Aeon: Triumphs of Thelema (14/09)

In this session, we explore the Trump cards of the Thoth Tarot through the lens of Crowley’s Thelemic philosophy. Each card becomes a portal into the spiritual architecture of the Aeon of Horus. We will trace the Fool’s journey as a path of spiritual initiation and alchemical transformation, resulting in True Will made manifest.

3. The Royal Fable: Embodying the Court Cards (21/09)

Crowley's complex system of court cards is layered with elemental dignities, astrological attributions, myths, Qabalistic pathways, and even the I Ching. Each court card dramatizes a specific formula of consciousness, shaped by its elemental lineage and historical purpose. In this workshop, we explore these figures as dynamic embodiments of self, others, and the forces that animate our lived experience.

4. The Fourfold Rite: Numerology of Pips (28/09)

This workshop traces the architecture of the Pip cards corresponding to Decans of the Zodiac, Qabalistic Tree of Life, Classical Elements and Pythagorean Numerology. From the Ace to the Ten, each card reflects the flow of the divine creative force, providing a practical map of manifestation, from abstract potential to material form.

5. The Opening of the Key: Crowley’s Divinatory Method (05/10)

We conclude the series with Crowley’s prefered method of divination by the Tarot; the Opening of the Key was designed to answer practical questions with clarity while also sharpening one’s intuitive faculties. Through hands-on practice, this method rapidly deepens your understanding of the symbolic correspondences between the cards, and their reflection in your life. We’ll explore the transcendental art of divination—where insight emerges from the dialogue between question, card, and consciousness.
